I rewatched the original over the weekend - the sequel is needless, and looks like a change in theme. (spoilers)
The first movie is focussed on how the protagonist wants to do good by bringing the fight to people who commit atrocities, but after learning that (basically) bringing the fight means going to war and making alliances with people just like the ones you are fighting, she ends up out of her depth and loses her moral centre.
The second looks more like it's about embracing that war without thinking very much about the moral cost.
This isn't an unusual pattern - a movie that finds an audience due to its gritty, ambiguous approach combined with good action and suspense gets a sequel that focusses only on the action/suspense parts - probably because the original said everything that needed to be said on the theme. Sicario = First Blood, Sicario 2 = Ranbo: First Blood Part II.
(I'm still planning to see it though)
