Basically, the average OW broadly stayed in the $18-19M range between 2000 and 2008, then jumped up to $22-$23M in 2010 and has stayed at that level since then. 2008 was when the MCU began, and with the growth of that franchise and the huge openings for other franchises like Jurassic and Star Wars you'd expect the average to keep rising. However there's been no significant change in the average - eg $22.9M in 2010 which had 4 $100M+ openers (all under $130M), compared with $23M in 2015, which had 6 $100M+ openers, three of them above $190M.
The data used is every wide release (650+ theatres), calculated on the weekend they went wide using the Fri-Sat-Sun. (So, Wednesday openers don't have their midweek box office included, and long weekend openers don't have the Monday included)
