And South Park, for me, is a tough comparison anyway, because of the medium. No matter how you slice it - animation is one degree of separation. That's part of why dark, adult-themed comics, in general, do work - because we process the themes of the comics without worrying subconsciously about the human element.
You're right about Fight Club - there are some key differences - notably the absence of children - that allow it work better on several levels. Although I am glad, after the fact, that Fincher was forced to cut the famous "abortion" line.
