Here's how much Netflix cares about the history of film on their streaming service:

Posted by: Goodvibe61 (a.k.a goodvibe61) on Jun 26, 23:07

I took a couple of the movie lists on my handy spreadsheet, including:

The site and sound list of the greatest movies ever

The AFI list of the 100 greatest films

I took these lists to go see how many of these films are streaming on Netflix right now.

If you think you're going to see the history of cinema streaming on Netflix, all I can say is good luck. Fortunately for Netflix, fewer and fewer people that care about this stuff are around, so the hour gets closer and closer at hand.

How many of these are streaming right now on everyone's favorite beloved Netflix:

The Godfather

The Godfather Part 2

Citizen Kane

All About Eve

Psycho

Vertigo

It Happened One Night

Gone With The Wind

Once Upon a Time in the West

Snow White and the Seven Dwarves

The Empire Strikes Back

The Maltese Falcon

Touch of Evil

Double Indemnity

2001 A Space Odyssey

Dr. Strangelove

The Rules of the Game

Rashomon

Seven Samurai

The Seventh Seal

La Dolce Vita

None of these "movies" are available for streaming on the streaming giant. Shocking, to nobody.

Great work in caretaking the history of cinema to the target market of Netflix.

As of about six months ago, there were more than 130 million people with streaming accounts on Netflix. There were 3 million subscribers to the old DVD part of Netflix, the part they've struggled to figure out how to exit from. When they eventually get around to it, we'll all be set with no opportunity to see films by Kurosawa, Bergman, Disney, Hitchcock, Welles, Leone, and so forth. We WILL be able to see Black Mirror, so I guess we're all in luck. I'm sure when we talk about the great history of cinema down the road, the next generations won't be talking about Citizen Kane; but it's cool, because evidently the equivalent of a 300 million dollar opening weekend's worth of people streamed the Kurt Russell Santa Claus movie.

So yeah, we can all rest easy knowing that Netflix will have our backs being the gatekeepers of Cinema History. The great Cinema Lovers of the 21st Century.

Netflix did have the Godfather trilogy not that long ago. But your premise is they won't show great classics with no regards to rights.. leo21 Jun 27, 01:23

I get it and I love all those movies too but...... SEETVFund Jun 27, 01:24

The LAST thing i am is surprised that Netflix doesn't have any of these great movies available to stream. {nm} Goodvibe61 Jun 27, 09:45

Netflix is a business, not a museum. Why single them out of all the streaming services? If the demand was there, the supply would be also. {nm} forlorne Jun 27, 06:00

Yeah, it not just Netflix. Most of that list is not available on any streaming service. {nm} warcraft86 Jun 27, 06:55

Which streaming service is it that cares about what movies they're streaming? LOL. Whatever product is available, that's what's streaming. {nm} Goodvibe61 Jun 27, 11:41

You could make the same ridiculous argument about any media outlet. Why doesn't radio stations all play the best classical music? StephD Jun 27, 06:34

What one radio station's strategy is to take all different genres of music and get rid of them? {nm} Goodvibe61 Jun 27, 10:33

Great Classical Stations play plenty of great Classical Music. Plenty. {nm} Goodvibe61 Jun 28, 00:15

Besides the obvious responses (appreciate everyone's responses about rights and demand), the better criticism would be towards Moviesnob Jun 27, 07:22

What does archiving & preservation even mean to a streaming service? {nm} forlorne Jun 27, 07:30

IMO, the importance of preservation of our shared history doesn't take a business model into account. Its has equal importance to everyone Moviesnob Jun 27, 07:38

Sorry, I didn't mean "mean" as in how important it is, I meant in the concrete sense, how does a streaming service contribute to forlorne Jun 27, 09:04

thats a different conversation and digital archives have their own challenges. We aren't there yet. Here's a good read Moviesnob Jun 27, 09:24

Any old Blockbuster Video store blows away Netflix streaming if you simply want to watch any film older than 1980. it's not close. {nm} Goodvibe61 Jun 27, 09:55

thats because blockbuster's model was transactional and first sale doctrine applied while Netflix's is subscription. {nm} Moviesnob Jun 27, 10:01

Your argument is that Netflix loves movies. Right? They "love" movies. What a load. It's all been said here. They love a buck. Goodvibe61 Jun 27, 09:58

it could be (although a subscription model around car tires isn't gonna work), but its not. Its movies and the company is filled with people Moviesnob Jun 27, 10:03

One of the best examples of this whole consumer vs film lovers issue is Adam Sandler. How many Netflix movies from him? And, discussed here? Goodvibe61 Jun 27, 10:31

so, if thats your barometer, they have made 5 adam sandler movies but have received 29 oscar noms their productions or acquistions Moviesnob Jun 27, 11:07

It's not "My Barometer". But that's great, you enjoy; i just looked them up: The Ridiculous 6, 8 Crazy Nights, and The Do Over as well. {nm} Goodvibe61 Jun 27, 11:39

It's nothing to sweat as it's a done deal with time. Sooner than later it will be nothing but Netflix when the theatrical is gone. Got it. Goodvibe61 Jun 27, 11:47

So what you mean to say is: Netflix loves consumers. Don't confuse that with: Netflix loves movies. Because movie lovers are left behind now {nm} Goodvibe61 Jun 27, 10:03

I reject your hypothesis. {nm} doitdoitdoitnow Jun 27, 08:03

Yeah, I'm sure Quentin is a big Netflix guy in lieu of his theater, i mean the theater. Good deal. {nm} Goodvibe61 Jun 27, 11:40

That's why I don't like their streaming service...you get much better movies with them (and more recent) with the DVD plan. {nm} Flash Jun 27, 08:03
