Indeed. I know that in Europe, such films are regarded by many to be too American, too Hollywood.
Americans, on the other hand, rarely regard movies as "too American". Too Hollywood, sure, but that's mostly limited to the arthouse crowd, saying that. In Europe you find those attitudes more broadly across the populations. Still, there are many who love America and and American blockbuster films. The percentage should just be a little lower there than domestically.
Also, plenty of Europeans have large home entertainment centers. Parents of kids tend to wait until movies like Iron Man come out on DVD, and watch them at home. There is no peer pressure among those age groups (mostly thirty-somethings) to go and see films in theatres. The peer pressure is more to stay at home with their kids, and receive visits from other parents with kids. Europeans can't bring kids to films like Iron Man - there's not the same "parental guidance" culture. The age limits are usually quite strict.
This is what I've gathered. I may be wrong. I can't point to data on this, and I doubt it's even been thoroughly researched. Cinema is regarded as low-culture in Europe.
I'd also believe that American arthouse films, indie films, tend to perform comparably even worse in Europe, as compared to domestic markets, than do Hollywood blockbusters.
The exceptions to the above tend to be pure children's movies like Ice Age and Shrek. Because then those parents of young kids can actually flow into theatres - the age limit to see the film is low enough that they can actually bring their kids, and there are many customized "parents + kids" daytime screenings. (And also arrangements for kindergardens and school classes to go to such movies together.) This could explain why certain US blockbuster kiddie flicks may do even better internationally than domestically.
