On the upside it was generally equally well liked by critics and general audiences, but a comeback for 3D with reused glasses will be hard.
3D was on its last legs before COVID, and even though transmissibility via glasses with the current variants of COVID-19 is a non-issue, it's going to be hard convincing the general moviegoing public of that. A very large chunk of AVATAR's success was IMAX 3D grosses and currently those are all on-site washed (REAL D, etc are sent out to be professionally cleaned/recycled). Some test sites might be ready for glasses free 3D for AVATAR 2, but it'll be years before it's wide scale available.
I think worst case scenario we still get full theatrical wide releases of AVATAR 2 & 3. 4 has been partly shot (but doesn't seem like significantly so) which leans toward them going forward with theatrical in some fashion (who knows what theatrical is going to look like in 2026), but I could also see 4&5 becoming a streaming project and or 5 not happening. 2&3 is said to tell a complete story, 4 fleshes it out a bit and 5 is world building.
That all said, depending on how Star Wars goes theatrically if projects are still failing to launch, even a modestly successful December sci-fi franchise every 2 years is better than nothing for the next decade.
