They were screening a dubbed on Sunday, a sub Monday evening, and another dub screening on Wednesday I believe. I went to the sub titled screening tonight.
Just an incredible piece of work. Beautiful and devastating. The imagination and vision in this are breathtaking. When I was watching it tonight, it brought back distinct memories of seeing it the very first time, I remember thinking just how striking it was, how it was so far removed from your typical American animation, just incredible. At the time I think it was my first experience with any Miyazaki film. it brought memories of that first Spirited Away screening a few yeras later, just thinking that this guy is obviously one of the greatest of all filmmakers.
Tonight's viewing brought all that rushing back. You walk out of the theater with your head just spinning. I still think my favorite single moment is that first encounted between Ashitaka and San. I will never forget that; that's what really sold me the first time. Wow. I just remember thinking "wow, this is no kids movie" lol. Unbelievably great.
For me this is a masterpiece. So happy to have gotten another opportunity to see this in a big theater. The Spectrum played it on a LARGE screen tonight. Grateful.
I would always recommend the subtitled version, but if you haven't seen it, i believe the dubbed version with the Miramax backed American voices plays again Wednesda night. A couple of those performances are also very, very good (Minnie Driver, Billy Bob, a couple others).
These Ghibli fests that have been put on in North America the last few years, they must really bring out audiences for these to get continually screened. I know there were at least 30-40 people in the theater tonight, very good for a Monday night really. And i'm going to see at least one or two more of these this year, I'm thinking Howl's Moving Castle for sure this time.
Great night.
