Missing the point
Studios have 2 major objectives - financial returns & critical acclaim with (generally - there being exceptions in case of indie producers - some of whom esp Documentary makers may have a 3rd - of reaching/informing as wide an audience as possible, sometimes for free & with no possibility even of critical acclaim) the former usually taking precedence over the latter. Oscar Best Pic winners have come to be synonymous increasingly with arthouse flicks (despite the widening of noms to 10 to appease some popular films). Its almost like they have to make a choice when marketing a movie - to position it as one for critical acclaim or a money making crowd pleaser. Cannes gives ample scope to both kinds. 3TYOL seems to belong to the money making category & has spent accordingly. To then go talk up potential critical accaim at a pre-release screening seems to be shooting themselves in the foot (telling the general audience its geared for shiny trophies) & unless the movie REALLY delivers it could mean them ending up empty handed on both - money & awards fronts. Would be better for them if they allowed awards talk to build organically while getting max people to see it. Shouldn't have spent the way they did if they wanted otherwise.
