although Maverick is technically a Top Gun sequel, really almost 40 years after the original it's closer to just another new Tom Cruise action movie (half the audience who is seeing this weren't even born in 1986 and have no actual relationship to Top Gun). star-driven summer movies playing big all summer long used to be the norm, not the exception but i doubt studios are smart enough or even care to learn from their past successes
