Donnie Moore was a relief pitcher for the Angels. In 1986, the Angels played Boston in the ALCS to go to the WS.
The Angels had never been there before. They were up 3 games to 1, and they pulled away in game 5. they were up by a few runs going into the 9th inning.
The starting pitcher gave up a home run to cut the lead to 1. they brought in a different reliever who put a guy on 1st, they brough in Moore.
You should've seen Anaheim Stadium; they were preparing for fans to storm the field. Police on horseback on the field; security everywhere.
Moore got one strike away. then he gave up a 2 run HR Dave Henderson, with 2 outs, 2 strikes, in the bottom of the 9th. The Angels tied it in the bottom of the 9th, they kept Moore in the game, he lost it in the bottom of the 11th.
Anaheim went back to Boston and lost games 6 and 7, and the Red Sox went to the World Series.
It's one of the more infamous moments in baseball history.
Moore was never the same. He was destroyed. He was destroyed by the media, by the fans. He became an alcoholic. His career was over shortly thereafter, he was never the same player or the same man.
A couple years later he shot his wife and then commited suicide. He died at the age of 35.
