Have a theory on that one (Spoiler alert - though the previous message has kind of done it already)
I think Tom Cruise didn't like having a heroine who was significantly taller than him Mission after Mission. Hayley Atwell - short & stocky - makes him look taller than he does with Rebecca Ferguson. The killing off was necessary & its unlikely though not (Mission) impossible that she'll be brought back. Might also be part of the reason(s) why the Edge of Tomorrow sequel with Emily Blunt is in limbo. He's never liked references to his height, though by now his star power overcomes most of that.
