Since Inside Out came along at the tail end of Pixar's genius level output, and things changed so much, and so soon afterward, it feels like lots of film lovers have underestimated the amount of love people have for that film.
The combination of events regarding box office did the most damage to consideration of the box office possibilities for this sequel. Disney going to streaming with these Pixar titles, them throwing the massive level of disrespect toward theatrical (something that feels incredibly idiotic), the myriad of problems Disney's been going through the past few years, most of them highly publicized, and the tearing down of the Pixar infrastructure for let's say "controversial" reasons, all of these elements helped severely deflate overall expectations.
For me, i didn't think it would hit THIS BIG, with all the box office poison Disney has helped create in the past few years. And so, I find myself elated that the movie is doing this well. i saw it earlier this week and truly loved it; it's a different kind of story from the original, but it's got its own set of emotional beats, and i found they hit me hard. HARD. By the end i was a mess, and was glad the weekday matinee wasn't so highly attended lol. A very strong movie, totally worthy of the Pixar catalog, and i'm elated for them.
Congrats Pixar. I'm pulling for every dollar this weekend and into July.
