I have been to this theatre I about 3 times. It's a cute theatre in a cute college town but was outdated when it opened brand new.

They opened as recliners were taking off with cramped uncomfortable seating (even by non-recliner standards). It's less than 8 minutes away from an Edwards (Regal) that was forced to reclinerize when AMC went in which is less than 3 minutes away from the AMC it mentions.

So overscreening is definitely an issue here and as you mention they aren't really doing too much to make themselves stand out from the AMC or the Regal (like most mostly indie theatres they were forced to book traditional wide releases) and that is at least partly out of their control.

I am pretty sure it'll be out by 2026 and would not be shocked if AMC closes down the Regal by 2026/2027. This is only about 12 minutes away from the infamously overscreened 10/15 freeway Ontario 22 and AMC 30 that reside in the same parking lot!

Claremont Courier: Pretty candid interview with Greg Laemmle on their struggling theatre in Claremont, CA notfabio Nov 22, 11:47

it's frustrating that it's easier to protest and complain than it is to actually go to a theater and support it financially. Moviesnob Nov 22, 13:20

and of all the things that people want for their theater its not great programming or respectful audience behavior or good customer service Moviesnob Nov 22, 13:22

That & presumably a good share of Laemmle locations' business was so tied to ultra-frequent moviegoers, who are now A-List/Unlimited people. dsbman Nov 22, 14:43

its this and more (notfabio observations below too) but if people are gonna complain to the theater owner about not staying in biz then you Moviesnob Nov 22, 16:10

tangentially, it seemed the Oscar hopeful films really rebounded well last year but so far, that has not been the case for the 2024 batch Moviesnob Nov 22, 16:17
