I have to imagine they want to connect everything but not depend on knowledge of Cobra Kai.
The movie is supposed to take place three years after the end of Cobra Kai which itself only spans 2-3 years from when it began. So I think the movie doesn't have to fully rely on what happens in Cobra Kai because it'll be more in the rearview. They may acknowledge it, though.
