Yeah the cat's out of the bad.
It seems every new streaming show is getting lower audience numbers than the previous ones. A slow motion train wreck in real time...
So how did this happen. I see 4 big reasons.
1. The shorter theatrical window sucks. (This means movies don't get long box office runs to build hype, in most cases. "Top Gun Maverick" was a notable exception. It set viewing records on every home platform it went to..cause it built incredible demand over 5 months in theaters)
2. Streaming shows don't follow genres very well. (It's no secret this latest film wave we're in, has collapsed film genres that were reliable) Want to turn in for a fun action film with little mindset? You're not getting it.. what you will get is some lecture on how action stars have no place in society norms... If you're lucky, you may even get a car chase (don't bet on it).. Boring as hell.. Rinse and repeat with other genres as well.
3. The audience isn't Netflix. (Yes everyone claims to be the next Netflix. But N is also struggling and had actual shows people enjoyed.. that built audiences over years. Audience building never happens on streaming shows hardly anymore. Its "take or leave it,," and no consideration of fan reaction...
4. Most important reason.. The talent on these streaming shows (in most cases) are just horrible. Many are amateurs with no professional production experience. If I have to hear another "The show runner has experience in advocacy and starting conversations, not story crafting" I'm going to tear my hair out. No one wants these streaming shows, they want entertainment.
If you disagree with my reasons. I remind you that Anime based properties are thriving. Kids love them. Social media interaction off them is off the charts. All of this is cause fan metrics actually mean something to anime based shows.
Hope that helps.. Victor Y.
