the Backroom is created from fractured and imperfect memory both its physical space and the things that exist inside it. it can "copy" these things but only in a highly inadequate way. So one character sees his ex wife but its not her, its a distorted copy as his memory (as all of our memories are) not real as its flawed. US is about actual clones as its subtext a group of people who are the "haves" and an identical group of people who are the "have nots". The subtext in BACKROOMS is about memory
