I think it comes down to a general inability to READ and LISTEN. A key thing is that Alex Garland may never have been involved with the third movie... he wasn't involved with the sequel, 28 Weeks Later, so what exactly would he know? For instance, does he know that 28 Days Later has been a rather successful comic for years now? Surely, he must know that and I'm sure whomever holds the rights must know it, so why on earth would he think that something he's never been involved with "is never going to happen"? Why would he even know if there's a script or not if he never was involved in it? So how is that "very bad news"? I think they would have been better off asking someone at Fox or Danny Boyle (who knows something about it) or others cause Garland's only attachment to the movie is that he's the writer of the original, that's it.
