that's kind of the point
as Mattie says right up front in the opening narration, nothing in life is free. if you want something, you have to pay a price. her arm was the price of (true) retribution against Tom Chaney for the death of her father. it's not coincidental that the recoil of the rifle shot that kills him is the thing that causes her to fall into the hole with the snakes, where she is bitten.
i didn't see her as bitter, though. i think she would say that she made a fair deal for what she got.
