How do you know that he doesn't give a crap about playing hard? That he doesn't offer leadership? Do you talk to him? Are you in the locker
room? I understand that you are frustrated with him, especially with the production he's giving at the price he is being paid. But going after him for qualities which you do not have first-hand observations of is silly. For all you know, Cal had no personality and wasn't much of a leader (being a diehard O's fan, I can attest to hearing reports on both sides of the coin for Cal, proving that unless you were there in the clubhouse, you don't know jack).
Mauer not willing to learn 1b until recently? Well, they do have Morneau there...I don't think they foresaw Justin having all his concussion problems this late into the season. Why would they take Mauer away from his most valuable position to learn a position where they have an incumbent star? I also recall Mauer being willing to start in the OF a few weeks ago when Span went back on the DL. Does that not count for something?
MVP caliber...he's been MVP caliber in 4 out of the 6 full seasons he's played...his WAR (aaaagh! sabermetrics!) has been pretty darn good every year. He's lead the league in batting 3 times, had OPS over 800 every year except 2005 and this year. Yes, he's not a slugger, and those 28 HR were an abberration. But again, I say, blame the ownership for giving him teh contract.
