This whole thing comes down to a philosophical debate as to whether the ends justify the means.

Here's the hypothetical situation no one wants to happen:

What if an American citizen, inside the United States borders, is about to set off a nuke on US soil (doesn't even matter where), and a drone stike is the only way that they can be prevented from doing so.

Is it the government's responsibility to prevent that from happening by any means necessary, if at all possible, or should they allow the explosion to happen and capture the individual(s) responsible later on and follow through with due process.

If it was a policeman on the scene and a criminal had ANY weapon of any kind that was even hinted at would be used to harm another person, the police would be justified in shooting to kill.

Is there a difference in this situation when it comes to drones?

Personally, I don't believe that the drones over US soil vs US citizens would be a commonplace event. It's not like they're going to launch a missile into a Starbucks for no apparent reason because one of the FBI's 10 most wanted was in there. I'd like to believe that it would be a last-resort option where it would save far more lives than it would cost.

Due process exists for a reason, but sometimes circumstances happen where people behave in such an egregiously dangerous manner that it falls outside every reasonable measure of tolerance and reasonable doubt as to their intentions.

I'm just glad Obama says he probably won't murder me without due process. Probably. {nm} Samuel_L_Bronkowitz Mar 07, 04:57

For once, I agree with John Cusack: "Where are the so-called progressive Democratic senators?” WHY did they not stand in agreement? edzep - Port Monkey! Mar 07, 05:47

There was a Democrat - Wyden - who joined the filibuster. (I'm not saying this is a great turnout, but credit where it's due) {nm} RogerMore Mar 07, 06:21

True. WHY was the fillibuster and the drone issue NOT covered much by the mainstream media? edzep - Port Monkey! Mar 07, 06:33

Probably because it's boring (except to people who are interested in that sort of thing). But it's the most prominent story at WaPo.com RogerMore Mar 07, 07:00

Yeah, nothing interesting about Dear Leader saying he probably won't abandon due process and use drones to kill Americans in America. Samuel_L_Bronkowitz Mar 07, 07:04

It makes for a boring news story. The pictures are Rand Paul talking on the Senate floor. The commentary is about due process and RogerMore Mar 07, 07:15

The big difference in this scenario is that someone like Mohhamed Atta being waterboarded is not an American citizen. Samuel_L_Bronkowitz Mar 07, 12:05

Another difference is "engaged in combat" vs "in captivity". (I'm not sure that "engaged in combat" will satisfy your concerns about RogerMore Mar 07, 12:49

Excellent points. Thank you for your response. {nm} BSmurf Mar 07, 15:04

Taking your scenario at face value, of course the government would have a responsibility to prevent the explosion. But the scenario is a RogerMore Mar 07, 19:58
