The adjust happens after the movie goes wide.
American Hustle was in 6 theaters for a week and then went to 2500, adjusted to 57. Grand Budhapest Hotel expanded over 3 weeks, and when it was wide it was only 900 theaters and adjusted to 35.
For both it was 3.0 X the first wide weekend + the previous gross up to that point.

So far there's no date for Birdman to go wide but with the buzz it's getting it certainly will at some point and will probably have grossed a substantial amount by then. If there was an announcement that it will get 700 theaters on Oct 31st then you'd see the price drop quite a bit since it won't adjust very high from that combo.
