10 years ago, in January of 2005, my friends and I are excited for our Colts. it's the Divisional Championship and we bid on an auction for a last minute 4 pack of tickets on eBay. the only issue is, the game is in Foxborough and auction ends Saturday morning. WE WON!!!
we're a group of guys making $35,000 or less that all except for one, work for the same company. all of us 26 or younger. we were just starting families and the money was tight at the time. no matter, we're on our way with cash in hand to meet the seller. only one problem, we need to get on the road now for the 12 hour drive and the seller isn't responding to our emails. that's okay, the seller will surely contact us through email and my wife can call me with the details of where will meet him Sunday. onward.
3 hours into the drive, piled in a 1995 Cavalier and 4 smelly guys... not a word from the wife on the seller returning our emails. 6 hours in, nothing. getting through Pennsylvania now and 9 hours in... not a peep.
we pull into Foxborough at midnight, all the restaurants are closed. only Dunkin Donuts is open this late, so we partake. guy in front of us... "make sure and put tree or four ice cubes in my coffee hun". he's wearing #12.
no hotel, motel or holiday inn has any vacancy. finally find a rathole 20 miles away with two full beds and is missing a 2 foot glass pane from the bathroom window. a bargain at $150. make sure to be out by 10am he says as he passes the key! that was the worst shower I've ever taken... and I've been to Burning Man.
by the next morning we're turning on each other, as it seems we've been duped by the eBay seller. looks like when he found out we were fans from Indy buying the tickets he had a change of heart. we're tearing the bedroom apart, throwing punches at each other. the dust settles and we decide to watch the game at a Hooters in Foxborough, then head home directly after.
what's this? I see a ticket scalper business a couple miles down the road from Gillette. GLORY HALELUJAH!! they have a four pack cheaper by $15 than what we originally had! we can feel the Colts swelling, they have to win, it's our time, right?
$50 parking and harassment like no other walking a mile to the stadium. not a particular fun walk. note to self, next time opt for the $100 lot a half mile closer.
get to the game and the fans are just awful. they didn't let up. final score 20-3, the pattys embarass us again.
the ride home was quiet, until the snowstorm hit. 5 miles off the highway for another crappy motel, where we sobbed ourselves to sleep.
got back home and did some investigative work on the seller of the original auction. found out he owned a catering company at UMass. told him to get his legal team ready, because I was coming for his business. total bull**** of course.
he sent a check to cover the tickets we bought and all other expenses. small victory.
I wouldn't trade that trip or the loss we took on the field that day for anything. and here we go again. I'm off to Foxborough. let's make some memories. go colts!
