The corollary of your argument is that neither Frankel or Mill Reef were true champions as they didn't race on dirt! Of course it's always difficult to draw a direct line of comparison as the two surfaces require different preparation, riding tactics and there is considerable evidence that the two disciplines require an entirely different genetic make-up. Trust me when I say that I have been watching thoroughbred racing for a very long time and have learned to recognise true champions wherever they race. Which is not to say that American dirt-track horses can't succeed on turf - you only have to look at Wesley Ward's track record with 2 year-olds at Royal Ascot.
