Anger, hate, and a militaristic fascination caused him to seek out anger, hate, guns and any sense of belonging to anyone or anything. One of the places he found it was with a White Supremacist group. As uncomfortable as it is, we need to stop ignoring the source of the most common of the common threads of these non-terrorist mass killings - mental instability. I don't know how you address it without interfering with civil liberties, but we waste a lot of time and effort focusing on the symptoms rather than the problem.
