legally/philosophically, i'd say personal self defense is not the premise of 2d Amendment (although Heller dubiously states otherwise). but
as a practical/political measure, there are no actual "moderates" in the debate anyway. if there were genuine moderates willing to accept "common sense" "bipartisan" "sensible" reforms, Manchin-Toomey would have passed long ago. there is actually no reform or control legislation, no matter how small or incremental, that can ever pass so long as the NRA keeps its grip on legislators.
(i'd personally prefer a SCOTUS that takes the opporutnity to merely overturn Heller and adopt a more honest, narrow textual interpretation of the Second Amendment, versus outright repeal. that would be enough to allow the mythical "sensible" reforms to ever pass if a legislature was so inclined. absent that though, if it's a choice between nothing and repeal, which is where things seem to stand today, i'll take repeal)
