they'll always have their talking points no matter what the other side proposes. we've been waiting 20 years for "sensible" gun laws.

they never happen because no matter how "common sense" or "bipartisan" they may be in fact, the NRA and its lawmakers will never agree to them, or even hold a vote on them if at all possible

Dems and supporters of reform should just say what they'll do when they are in power and have enough votes to pass things and let the voters decide. stop negotiating with bad-faith actors and just get the votes where you can and pass what you want to see enacted

this just gives the NRA and the GOP more talking points. IMO it shouldnt be about repealing 2A, it should be about sensible gun control {nm} Moviesnob Mar 27, 11:06

but a complete repeal of the 2nd amendment goes against a person's right of self defense - thats a line a lot of moderates will never cross {nm} Moviesnob Mar 27, 13:15

legally/philosophically, i'd say personal self defense is not the premise of 2d Amendment (although Heller dubiously states otherwise). but slipping jimmy Mar 27, 14:01

right to bear arms at its core is about the right to self defense. Not at the founding, the authors were terrified of standing armies, but Moviesnob Mar 27, 14:16

There are moderates, they are just scared to speak because of the extremes or (inside) DTravel Mar 28, 09:37

if you don't actually cast moderate votes, you're not really a moderate {nm} slipping jimmy Mar 28, 11:22

how about they just read the whole thing and enforce the "well regulated" part of it? {nm} lapuckfan Mar 27, 12:21

that's not necessarily inconsistent with the holding of Heller (though I would overturn Heller all things being equal). legislatures still slipping jimmy Mar 27, 12:28
