the notion that these were all legitimate tax avoidance strategies under existing law only makes sense if you think Donald Trump also was completely on the up and up in accounting for his multiple businesses' profits and losses (since carrying over years of claimed losses on those businesses is how he continued to net out a zero tax liablity)
which, if you believe that, go read the NYT investigation of the old man's decades long tax fraud scheme to pass all his assets to the kids (which Donald then cheated his brothers out of their shares anyway) with a host of scammy real estate practices
anyone who reads that article, which is just a tip of the iceberg, and thinks "well i'm sure there's a totally reasonable and legitimate explanation for decades of annual multi-million dollar losses" i have a bridge to sell you
