Based on the novel by Jurek Becker, Jakob the Liar contains the heart-wrenching kind of material that goes over well at the Oscars. German director Frank Beyer proved this point in 1974, when his Jakob, der Luegner received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. As with the German original, the American film details the life of Jakob Heym (Robin Williams), who assures his friends in the Jewish ghetto that the Russians are winning World War II. Although a German invasion is imminent, Jakob tries to bring hope where there is little.
