Set in the racially tense atmosphere of the South, Monster's Ball analyzes three generations of people and their racial prejudices. Hank (Billy Bob Thornton) and his son Sonny (Heath Ledger) work as prison guards. It's business as usual when one of the inmates, who is African-American, is being prepared for execution. When his widow (Halle Berry) falls in love with Hank and moves into the house shared by his grandfather (Peter Boyle), everybody's idea of racial boundaries and personal prejudices are thrown into upheaval.
