Chocolat is a sweet celluloid concoction from director Lasse Hallstrom. Based on the novel by Joanne Harris, the story centers on a mysterious woman, played by Juliette Binoche, who moves into a small town and opens a chocolate shop. In no time, social order is turned upside-down by her confections in a variety of funny and romantic interludes. The mayor views chocolate as a sin and begins to see his power threatened by the success of the chocolate shop. Judi Dench, Lena Olin, Alfred Molina, and Johnny Depp delivered strong supporting roles. Chocolat is produced by Miramax which also backed Hallstrom's Oscar nominated The Cider House Rules last year.
