Purple Butterfly is about a young Chinese woman in a resistance organization against the Japanese occupation of China during the 1930s. Years earlier, she had a brief relationship with a Japanese man. The two cross paths once again on opposite sides of the spectrum. Written and directed by Lou Ye, the film screened at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival.
