Whisper Numbers: American takes on Kingsman

The quintessential American Made movie star returns to theaters to take on Kingsman: The Golden Circle [KTSS2], but is unlikely to beat the British spy flick. Kingsman: The Secret Service dropped 49% in its second weekend. As a sequel with poorer reviews, Kingsman: The Golden Circle is likely to tumble more than 55% to $17.5 million

The horror juggernaut It [IT1] looks to devour another $15 million to advance its total towards $290 million.

Tom Cruise [TCRUI] toplines American Made [MENA] about the real-life exploits of a pilot who smuggled drugs for the Medellin drug cartel and ran guns for the CIA. Marketing has played up the comedy in the R-rated drama, which shares a similar tone to War Dogs, which opened to $14.7 million. Universal is banking on Cruise’s starpower to carry American Made, but you have to go back to 2010’s Knight & Day to find a Cruise vehicle not based on a previous property. Dropping in 3023 theaters, American Made could land $14 million.

As a family targeted film, The LEGO Ninjago Movie [NJAGO] should hold 60% of its debut to finish around $12 million.

Ellen Page [EPAGE] and Diego Luna [DLUNA] lead Flatliners [FLATL], a reboot of the 1990 film. The PG-13 rated thriller isn’t screening for critics nor offering Thursday night showings. That really demonstrates what Sony thinks of the film. Rolling into 2552 theaters, Flatliners could clear $8 million.

After averaging $24,545 per theater in limited release, Battle of the Sexes [BTSEX] expands wide into 1223 theaters. Emma Stone [ESTON] and Steve Carell [SCARE] topline the 1973 tennis bout between Billy Jean King and Bobby Riggs. The Fox Searchlight drama has earned rave reviews and Oscar buzz. Battle of the Sexes should serve up $4 million.

Targeted at African-Americans, the PG-13 rated thriller Til Death Do Us Part [TDDUP] could tally $2 million from 550 locations.

Targeted at Christians in 661 theaters, the PG-rated drama A Question of Faith [AQOFF] could capture $1.5 million.

That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
