A ticket to Pandora proved less popular this holiday season as Avatar: Fire and Ash [AVAT3] collected an estimated $88.0 million to lead the weekend box office. The sequel fell short of Avatar: Way of the Water’s $134.1 million in 2022, but did top Avatar’s $77.0 million in 2009. Imax and PLFs made up 45% of the grosses, while 3D accounted for 53%.
David [DAVID] opened in second place with $22.02 million, the highest ever for Angel Studios. The faith-based animated film received an A CinemaScore.
The Housemaid [HMAID] cleaned up $19.0 million to debut at the third spot. The thriller skewed females at 70%.
The Spongebob Movie: Search for SquarePants [SPBO4] soaked up $16.0 million to open in fourth place. It’s the third lowest in the franchise, only ahead of the third film Sponge on the Run which opened in only 300 theaters during COVID.
Zootopia 2 [ZOOT2] rounded out the top five with $14.5 million. The animated sequel has accumulated $282.81 million after 4 weekends.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 [5NAF2] tallied $7.25 million for a total of $108.93 million after 3 weekends.
Wicked: For Good [WCKD2.BW] grossed another $4.30 million in its fifth weekend to up its haul to $320.51 million.
Dhurandhar [DHURA] took in $2.46 million in its third weekend, bringing its total to $12.6 million.
Opening in just 6 theaters, Marty Supreme [MRTSU] scored $875K.
Hamnet [HAMNT] earned another $850K in its third weekend of wide release for a sum of $8.76 million.
Eternity [ETERN] grossed $582K, bringing its total to $14.81 million after 4 weekends.
Ella McCay [EMCAY] tumbled 76% from its debut to $480K for a running tally of $3.57 million.
Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution [JJTK3] scored $339K in its third outing for a total of $15.94 million.
