Moviegoers got a 3D lesson in pet care at the theaters this pre-Easter weekend with How to Train Your Dragon [HTRYD]. The DreamWorks Animation film opened with an impressive $43.3 million at the box office. The film unspooled in 3D format in 2,178 of its 4,055 theaters. With the Easter holiday and spring break season, How to Train Your Dragon should have good legs for the coming weeks.
Alice in Wonderland [ALCNW] fell to second place behind Dragon. The Tim Burton [TBURT]/Johnny Depp...
Two new films with literal titles enter the multiplex this weekend. The PG-rated How to Train Your Dragon [HTRYD] squares off against the R-rated Hot Tub Time Machine [HOTUB] in a battle for different target audiences.
With its emphasis on storytelling rather than smirking animals firing off one-liners, Dragon (as recent ads have abbreviated) is the first film from DreamWorks Animation that looks like it could have sprung from Disney/Pixar. The influence no doubt stemmed from director...

After testing seemingly every young actor in Hollywood, Marvel went back to a familiar face and cast Chris Evans [CEVAN] as Steve Rogers in The First Avenger: Captain America [CAPAM]. Evans previously starred as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in two Fantastic Four films, but the franchise is being rebooted with a new cast by Fox. InThe First Avenger: Captain America, Evans will play a U.S. soldier during World War II who becomes a superhero after being injected with the Super Soldier...
Universal has put a redband trailer online for the comedy Get Him to the Greek [GHGRK]. The new trailer adds R-rated language, but otherwise plays out pretty much the same as the previous greenband trailer. Even though Get Him to the Greek was spun off Forgetting Sarah Marshall to feature more ofAldous Snow, Russell Brand [RBRAN]seems to be playing second fiddle again to the character played by Jonah Hill [JHILL].
Three new films took their shot, but none could dethrone Alice in Wonderland [ALCNW], which stayed number one for a third weekend with an estimated $34.5 million. Disney's 3D fantasy has already accumulated $265.7 million to set a new record for a March release.
Fox's Diary of a Wimpy Kid [WIMPY] opened in second place with $21.8 million. The family fiilm had the advantage of a having a rabid fanbase of pre-teens for the best-selling book series.
Fox and Walden Media have given teenybopper fans of Selena Gomez [SGOME] the first look at her upcoming movie Ramona and Beezus [RMONA] based on the best-selling children's book series by Beverly Cleary. The film is rated G, which should serve as a warning sign for anyone not considered its target audience.
The original Predator was not only a sci-fi action classic, it had the distinction of featuring two future U.S. governors in Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jesse Ventura. Twenty years after the urban-set sequel Predator 2, the newest sequel/reboot Predators [PRED3] returns to a jungle setting, albeit on another planet. The teaser still keep the alien hunters in the dark even though we already known they look like. Freeze-frame! However, the Predators appear to have themselves some alien...
Three movies about society's unglamorous positions (bounty hunter, repo men, and middle school kid) look to put a dent in the earning powers of the high-flying Alice in Wonderland [ALCNW]. Most films with $100 million+ openings tend to fall dramatically in its second weekend, but Alice held up better than expected on the appeal of its 3D spectacle. With the next 3D fare not appearing until next weekend, the re-imagined fantasy classic should lock up the box office title for a third time at...
Based on the best-selling memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love [ETPLV] stars Julia Roberts [JROBE] as a happily married woman who suffers a mid-life crisis. Divorcing her husband and postponing her career, she goes on a journey of self-discovery around the world to find out what she really wants from life. Yeah, what middle-age women wouldn't want a younger guy who looks like James Franco [JAFRA] and a Latin lover who looks like Javier Bardem [JBARD].
