what you receive for a shorted stock completely depends on where you shorted it
using your example, if you shorted it at $45 and it delists at $40, you would have made $5 per share. so, 45 x 50,000 = $2,250,000. at delist, that would be worth $2,500,000 (not including commissions on this example).
if you had shorted it at $35, at delist, it would be worth $2,000,000. basically, if you are right and your short's price goes down, the value of your account goes up. at delist, it is the difference between where you shorted it and delist times the number of shares.
note that if you short a low priced stock and it goes up more than 2 times, when you sell or it is delisted, HSX will take money OUT of your account. make sense?
