My understanding is that if you do a cost/benefit analysis of the marketing costs to grosses ratio
You can come out ahead financially this way, even if you make less money total. The films do about as much in VOD as they do in theatrs and I think the distributor keeps more money from VOD. Plus, if the movie is good, the VOD acts as a commerical for the theatrical release. Most of these movies live and die by word of mouth.
