You're not even taking into account that in 2009, The Final Destination was one of the biggest pre-Labor Day weekend openers

Posted by: TheWeekendWarrior on Aug 26, 23:23 in response to Oleg Max's post very interesting but such a WRONG idea about Labor Day...

And that movie is one that would have automatically had a huge 2nd weekend drop-off. Last year, there was Takers and Last Exorcism pre-Labor Day, two movies that both did $20 million (defying expectations for that weekend) and both of those would also have a larger than normal drop-off, plus they didn't have strong Labor Day openers either year.  2007, Labor Day was up from the previous weekend cause they had Halloween, and every year before that, it was down roughly 6%... but again... none of those pre-Labor Day weekends had a hurricane that shut down theaters on the East Coast like this year.

So don't go throw numbers in my face or go accusing me of ****. I've been doing this a long time and most of the time, I know what I'm talking about. None of this week's openers will have the normal drop-offs they may have had if they didn't open against Hurricane Irene. (Even THELP will end up doing worse than it might have if it had a normal weekend.)

Estimates have THELP winning the weekend with only 11 mill?! Wha??? {nm} Paul2k Aug 26, 18:40

THR agrees in reporting that estimators are saying business could be down 10-20% because of Irene. Paul2k Aug 26, 18:42

And THR is posting actual numbers: CLMBA possible second with less than 10 mil, AFRAD and MIBRO may only reach 6-7 mil. Paul2k Aug 26, 18:48

he-he. nikki is saying that LBESS directed CLMBA... ouch... {nm} Oleg Max Aug 26, 18:48

WOW! that's really bad for Dark. From what I hear it's a solid film and the traiers look good, but once again that R rating becomes the kiss wrongturn687 Aug 26, 18:54

its just a very bad wknd to release a movie. this one and/or the labor day one could even be worse... Oleg Max Aug 26, 19:01

If no one can go out this weekend, next weekend could do much bigger business than normal as people make up for lost entertainment. {nm} TheWeekendWarrior Aug 26, 19:11

I was actually thinking that, too. Ruthian23 Aug 26, 19:20

very interesting but such a WRONG idea about Labor Day wknd. Oleg Max Aug 26, 19:56

*rings bell* And.... FIGHT! :P (just kidding) {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Aug 26, 20:30

Based on the fact that many if not most NYC and NorthEast theaters may be closed over the next two days. TheWeekendWarrior Aug 26, 23:15

The movies opening this weekend were never going to do that well to begin with, bad weather didn't affect them that much. {nm} HarryWarden Aug 26, 23:11

I say all three new releases tonight. Enjoyed each to varying degrees. Didn't hate any of them. Liked AFRAD the best. {nm} HarryWarden Aug 26, 22:56
