Essentially a marketing slogan used for some of the first championship series in the early 20th century that stuck...
It was called different things such as "World's Championship Series" which shortened to "World's Series" and such. At the time it was just a sensationalized way to market the game between the top team in two different leagues.
As a small rationalization for why it's still kept today outside of precedence, while the teams are all North American, MLB arguably is comprised of the best players from around the world. MLB can be considered the top tier of world baseball.
