Just my opinion, but strike one against the MPAA is that they are so secretive

Posted by: DTravel on Dec 01, 14:07 in response to Antibody's post Disagree. The MPAA are Puritans that censor expressions...

They will not issue guidelines for their own raters, let alone the film makers.  Raters apparently just assign whatever rating "feels right" based on their mood when they view the submitted film.  (Those disclaimers the public sees about "rated Z-27 for cartoon violence, etc." apparently have no real meaning.)

They will not say <u>why<u> a movie is given the rating it gets, so if the film makers want to re-submit trying to get a different rating they have to blindly guess what scenes or shots need to be cut.

They will not say who the raters <u>are<u> (though what evidence I'm aware of indicates that they are theatre chain owners selected for their strong Christian beliefs, which leads to the next problem...).

They will not disclose what the criteria are for selecting raters.

All of which IMO indicates the whole rating process is male bovine digestive end product.

LAT on marketing [SHAME]. Cinemark declined to book the film. Antibody Dec 01, 10:50

It's depressing how the stigma of NC-17 is so evident in the US. One of the reasons I'm glad I don't live there ;) {nm} numbersix_99 Dec 01, 11:54

not really. its more depressing that filmakers keep on trying to push the envelope by putting Oleg Max Dec 01, 12:02

I think the answer to that probably depends on the movie. It kind of sounds like in this movie, it was necessary. {nm} Ruthian23 Dec 01, 12:05

Disagree. The MPAA are Puritans that censor expressions of artful sexuality, while premitting violence. {nm} Antibody Dec 01, 12:12

both should be carefully reviewed. Oleg Max Dec 01, 12:34

How many NC-17 movies do they make, though? Not many. In fact, it's usually the other way. They make movies that might have been better Ruthian23 Dec 01, 13:04

Did any exhibitors refuse to show The Passion Of The Christ? Cinemark? Carmike? What about 300? Hostel? If so, I consider their conduct DTXbro Dec 01, 13:18

I donno, maybe becuase THE AUDIENCE WANTS SEX AND VIOLENCE and it's a business. So that's what they get. tawdryhepburn Dec 01, 13:38

Realistically as much as people don't want to talk about it, I think it comes down to what religious belief system you have as to whether or accountant_4_Jesus Dec 01, 14:45

Why is sex or nudity unsuitable? Your premise is absurd and self loathing. Your body isn't sinful! {nm} tawdryhepburn Dec 01, 13:35

Not much hazing. You just accept your Delta Tau Chi name, like Dorfman and Stork did, which is provided by the Sergeant at Arms (me). Plus DTXbro Dec 02, 01:10

Marcus and Carmike Cinemas also refuse to book the film because of the rating. I talked to reps from both this week. {nm} HarryWarden Dec 01, 14:41
