That "Planes" movie was announced when "Cars 2" was hitting theaters this summer. "Cars 2" was only produced because "Cars" in 2006 was so profitable with its toys.
"Planes" will sell a lot of plane toys. Disney wants to produce features like this because they're easier to market through toys. Simple.
