Haven't seen the movie but sounds like they were just trying to avoid a stereotype.
Why can't Jews be bad guys? I'd think they must be a little tired of always being the over-educated neurotics who love family and money. According to Hollywood, I'm rich (I wish) and must have no conscience because I'm on Wall St., I'm dopey but polite because I'm Canadian, and being of Irish extraction I'm a drunk. You don't see arabists whining about how all the terrorists in the media have olive skin but they overwhelmingly do. It's not exactly cinematic genius to do a little switch-em-up, but points for trying.
