I stand by my opinion...
It was a fun time and meant to be campy. Even though they're all musicals, throwing Sweeney Todd, Les Mis, and Phantom is just not fair, those are shows that are meant to carry a bit more dramatic weight. Sweeney Todd is probably Sondheim's easiest musical to transfer to screen and even though it's not as well known as the other 2, it's music is catchy and it features Johnny Depp in a Tim Burton movie that's much more in line with his beloved early films and received really good reviews.
I went to see Phantom twice in theaters, but I'll say that it's pretty bad, Gerard Butler can't sing well, Patrick Wilson can sing and act outside of the movie but somewhere along the way he lost the ability in this and was rather bland, Emmy Rossum is really good and the best of the main 3, but she just doesn't seem to fit the part the vast majority of the time. Add those reasons to the fact that they demystify the PHantom by giving away all of his tricks and you're left with a movie that falls a bit flat considering the potential it had.
Les Mis looks very good so far, though I'm still waiting to see Crowe can pull off Javert and Jackman can sing Valjean
