Well, I think there are plenty of folks who will turn out for Precious. The problem will not be attendance...but seats for that attendance.

Posted by: Catzan on Nov 16, 00:30 in response to Facto's post I'm still not seeing this massive turn-out for Precious....

However, Lionsgate will be putting it in 600 theaters that it feels the film WILL succeed in and create a significant PTA. $20,000 PTA? I have my doubts...but it will be strong enough so that Lionsgate can sell this picture to more screens. This looks similar to the Slumdog build up. You have Oprah and Tyler Perry's followers lining up to see this. People are clamoring at their local theaters for this movie to come to their local cineplex. Similar to the "demand it" campaign by Paranormal.

This has a serious Oscar push coming along, too. I have just seen the trailer and have only heard that this is a gritty hard R film that is a must see. It is supposed to look unflinchingly at the underbelly of the American ghetto. I guess the fascination with it might be compared to passing a horrible train wreck and not being able to tear your eyes from it.

Twilight is not competition. That is why Precious is not going wide right up against it...it doesn't have to in order to get the results it is looking for. What is interesting is you have Blindside which is a more typical uplifting story with it's less than R rating that is meant to e a crowd pleaser as opposed to the shock that presumably will be delivered by Precious. But again...Precious is on a different release pattern. Blind is opening to get a jump on Thanksgiving I guess and to offer an alternative to the male sports demo that wants to avoid Twilight.

I think Precious will draw an older audience this weekend which is not wholly part of the Twihard demo. Plus, I am betting that those 600 some odd theaters will be in african american neighborhood theaters that again support a PTA building juggernaut that helps sell the film to more mainstream audiences and their theaters.

I've heard that Blind is a good flick, but I think it suffers as well as Planet 51. Those are the two I think may not make the RS predictions. But who knows, the Box OFfice expands to fit the taste of the public. These flicks all have interested demos that may help buoy November to records.

Just my opinion...I never got into the booking end but the pattern seems pretty obvious.

Glad Blindside went up. Now will tracking go 5 for 5? Wrong for: Saw, TII, ACC, 2012, will the next be New Moon? {nm} Mattrek Nov 15, 15:09

Thanks! Gonna be a busy weekend! {nm} Catzan Nov 15, 15:48

You may be onto something, but at the same time, we've been talking for weeks now about how there seems to be pent up demand.. {nm} Facto Nov 15, 20:30

I'm thinking Precious may be tracking too high? Teenage girls/women who'd see it for Mo'nique/Carey, will be seeing Twilight Facto Nov 15, 20:58

I'm still not seeing this massive turn-out for Precious. What is it about it? Great soundtrack, or something? A fat ghetto girl gets Facto Nov 15, 23:31

A very well written and well argued post, but only time will tell what's what.. Pent up demand suggests we may head for a record breaker WE. {nm} Facto Nov 16, 01:05

Thanks. Somerset Nov 15, 19:53

Thanks. HPOT4's non-summer opening weekend record (102.7M) is definitely in play. {nm} Jelly Nov 15, 20:05

When can we expect tracking for The Princess and the Frog (FROGP)? {nm} HurriKaty Nov 16, 09:59
