ERC does not determine how the box office is reported (the movie studios do)

Posted by: RazorHawk on Jun 16, 19:10 in response to second gary's post As razorhawk pointed out below, the adjust question was...

It looks like Warner Bros originally planned to group the Walmart special Thursday showings with the midnight numbers.  On Friday Warners reported the Thursday shows along with the midnights.

Players on HSX started questioning the fairness of that accounting process.  It looks like people in the real world started questiong the accounting also.  Is it really fair to credit that money to the movies opening weekend since they were specially planned screenings with pre-sold tickets?

On Saturday morning, Warner Bros starting reported Friday box office (including midnights) seperate from the Thursday Walmart showings.  It was clear (to me) at that time that the Thursday showings would be reported seperate from the weekend.

The standard adjust for movies that report box office before the opening weekend  is "[Week Days B.O. + (2.7*Box Office Friday-Sunday)]" (listed in the HSX glossary under 'Adjusts').  This is the adjust that happened.  It was discussed on the boards.

There is a way that things are done and have been done for years.  It is not possible to write a set of rules that cover every situation (even situatiions that have never even been imagined yet).

For example, it is not possible to write a rule that says how a movie will be adjusted when it is planned to be a normal adjust using the standard formula but then the Hollywood community calls into question some shady accouting principles so the movie company changes the way that they are reporting box office on Saturday morning when the HSX staff has the day off.

RotoHockey got burned this weekend because he spends his time here posting useless news items and posting lousy IPO Idea suggestions (eventhough he has been asked many times to stop).  If he had friendships with some long term players who have been thru situations like this in the past, they could have helped him out and told him what was coming (again... I knew what was going to happen when Fridays numbers were posted on the board Saturday morning)

Here's Why The HSX (SUPR2) Adjust Decision Was A Bad Decision - (INSIDE). RotoHockeyYTD2013 Jun 16, 17:07

I hope it happens but I know that it will not; odd that I missed the thread will viewing SUPR2. I don't want charity I truly believe damenchipguy Jun 16, 17:14

Here's the explanation - they had to wait until today to see how ERC reported the whole weekend. Now, lets move on. {nm} Moviesnob Jun 16, 17:19

Dude. Get over it... eyescovered Jun 16, 17:21

As razorhawk pointed out below, the adjust question was discussed (and to my mind settled) on this board Friday afternoon. second gary Jun 16, 18:04

Retroactive changes have happened before - this time it hit you, suck it up and move on like the rest of us had to in the past {nm} JDolphin Jun 16, 18:14

If you are going to go strictly by the calendar and rules, then maybe the 12 mil shouldn't count at all in the adjust (reasoning inside) JDolphin Jun 16, 18:27

Exactly. {nm} eyescovered Jun 17, 04:06

Did the average player even know about this WalMart Presale? No. And all it's doing is over inflating theater business for the weekend. hankquinlan Jun 16, 21:52

*shrug* That's the way it goes. I'm ready to move on. {nm} mrbeankc Jun 16, 22:02

so are you saying Thursday should now be considered part of the weekend?...that would be a whole change of policy {nm} tealfan Jun 16, 22:27

Regardless profit or loss, the Rules shouldn't be changed retroactively. Period. {nm} yenchex Jun 16, 22:35

That was the exact Point. {nm} RotoHockeyYTD2013 Jun 17, 05:33
