Ten reasons I think RIPD is a mortal lock for a huge opening weekend.

Posted by: RogerMore on Jul 13, 09:04

Just look at the star power in the movie!

1. Jeff Bridges. He plays a Wild West law-man type! Just like in True Grit, which won him an Oscar! RIPD ups the stakes by transferring his character to modern times, putting a wacky twist on the Western. If there's one thing recent box office history tells us, audiences flock to see wacky Westerns!

2. Ryan Reynolds. Every time Ryan Reynolds opens his mouth, ladies swoon. And this week, the female demographic will have no other option to hear his beautiful voice - except by checking out RIPD!!

3. Mary Louise Parker. As with Ryan Reynolds, there's nowhere MLP will be this weekend on the big screen except RIPD. Weeds fans will be turning out to see this movie in droves!!!

RIPD has true star power, unmatched by any other movie coming out next weekend. $40M OW minimum! But if this cavalcade of heavy-hitting movie stars is not enough reason for you to support, check out these thoughts on the core concepts of the movie!!

4. Original ideas. Audiences are tired of boring sequels and predictable franchises. They want to see fresh, original movies, with new characters they can get to know, original stories that take them by surprise and things they haven't seen before on the big screen. If there's one thing the general movie-going audience rewards, it's original ideas. And RIPD has them in spades. Moviegoers will reward RIPD just for being original!!!!

5. Did I mention original ideas? Check out how original RIPD is! It's about a good guy cop a good guy cop is transferred to a secret police force that protects ordinary people from alien forces they don't even know about! And they get to use all kinds of crazy weapons that splatter these alien forces in bizarre colours! And he's partnered with a grizzled old veteran, who has to teach him the ropes and put up with his ****y attitude! I'm sure they'll end up good friends and effective partners though. This doesn't sound like any movie anyone has ever seen! People will be handing over their first-borns to buy tickets!!!!!

6. Soul transfer. Audiences love movies where a character's soul leaves its body and gets up to all sorts of adventures. And they've never seen this in combination with Ryan Reynolds. Box office gold!!!!!!

7. Ryan Reynolds fighting big swirly coulds in the sky. Speaking of combinations we haven't seen before, it looks like a big swirly cloud in the sky comes to invade Earth and Ryan Reynolds has to save the day! Prepare yourself for brilliance!!!!!!!

8. Comic books. If that's not enough originality for you, RIPD is based on a comic book. Ā Audiences love comic book movies with their larger-than-life characters! Especially ones based on comic books they haven't heard of. If you're worried about being trampled by hordes of cinemagoers while waiting in line to buy tickets for RIPD, just imagine the crush of flesh when people discover it uses a Dark Horse comic book as source material! It'll be like World War Z, except with RIPD fever!!!!!!!!

9. The budget. Moviegoers love seeing big budgets plastered up on the big screen! And the producers spent $130 million making this movie. Logically, it will look like $130 million too, because can you imagine spending $130 million on a movie and have it come out looking like garbage? I sure can't! It's inconceivable! That means audiences will be getting $130 million worth of value just from buying a $10 ticket! I'm starting to think that $80M OW is too low!!!!!!!!!

10. Marketing. The marketing for this movie has been fantastic! How else can you explain compelling, non-generic posters that make even the sourest, under-a-rock senior citizen want to see the movie? Like this?

and this?

and this?

If that doesn't convince you, check out the trailer!

My eyes are watering, my mouth is going hoarse, my funny-bone is tickling from the sheer amount of entertainment I expect to see based on this high-quality totally non-derivative marketing effort! I just hope I can make it to Friday before my brain melts in anticipation!!!!!!!!!!

I'm going to stand in line for tickets now, so I can beat the rush! I can spend the time counting the H$ I will make from what is certain to be a hugely profitable investment!!! Not even Buddha himself can stand in its way!!!! Anything less than a $100M OW is utterly inconceivable!!!!! I will not be moved from my opinions!!!!!!

#3... Mary Louise Parker will be appearing in both RIPD AND Red 2... both opening next weekend {nm} RazorHawk Jul 13, 09:12

That's just your opinion! {nm} RogerMore Jul 13, 09:18

No no no, it's "That's, like, just your opinion, man." If you're going to reference Jeff Bridges in a post, then do it all the way. {nm} Paul2k Jul 13, 11:51

You're not privy to all the new (stuff), so uh, you know, but that's what you pay RogerMore for. {nm} BSmurf Jul 13, 11:58

#5... Isnt RIPD about ghosts.... not aliens? {nm} RazorHawk Jul 13, 09:15

Alien forces /= aliens! If you can't see reason, I'm just going to post relentlessly on this point until you concede! {nm} RogerMore Jul 13, 09:19

While I don't necessarily think it will do 40 ow, I do think it can manage mid 20's... Oleg Max Jul 13, 09:21

I'm goin out on a limb and gonna say this entire post and every point is complete sarcasm! LuCiFeR Jul 13, 09:22

Especially everything after Jeff Bridges winning an Oscar for "True Grit" (huh????) on down. {nm} helmetz Jul 13, 09:25

"Was that sarcasm?", "Noooooo", "Was *that* sarcasm?" islander Jul 13, 09:47

lol...but please don'l ever let a studio exec hear you, Roger...they might take you seriously! {nm} tealfan Jul 13, 09:30

I'm disappointed that you didn't make every point a different post. {nm} Paul2k Jul 13, 09:39

No {nm} RogerMore Jul 13, 10:27

Why would I do that? {nm} RogerMore Jul 13, 10:27

That would be tedious {nm} RogerMore Jul 13, 10:27

and would make me seem tedious too {nm} RogerMore Jul 13, 10:29

when really I'm not {nm} RogerMore Jul 13, 10:29

lolololololol {nm} mysti HSX Jul 13, 09:47

is the budget for this slick pic 130 million !! utterly wasted cash bunty_ketti Jul 13, 10:26

That was brilliantly written! I spit out my tea when i saw the posters. But can a mouth get hoarse? {nm} forlorne Jul 13, 10:55

Roger, more! Please! {nm} Dales Jul 13, 11:29

It's an MIB ripoff. Ryan Reynolds doesn't have nearly the star power of Will Smith, and Jeff Bridges is a little long in the tooth. {nm} elchan Jul 13, 12:51

I think R.I.P. is what this movie will do at the box office. {nm} elchan Jul 13, 12:55

Have you seen the previews for Seventh Son? Total crap. Bridges is building a nest egg at this point with all the big budget garbage. {nm} BSmurf Jul 14, 01:08

RIPD $127M OW thatmichaelguy Jul 13, 13:05

CNJUR is going to eat its lunch. {nm} goodvibe61 Jul 13, 15:17
