"The largest combined domestic take for the January openers in any single year in the 2000s had been $409,226,078. 2009's releases brought in an incomprehensible $810,677,759, almost exactly double that amount."

I notice the Jan 2010 openers are cumulatively priced below $500m on HSX & therefore wonder if last year's BO expansion was a one-off event, or will we see some uplift in future?

AVATR should win the 1/8 weekend, but will it beat out BOELI on 1/15? {nm} lobogotti Jan 03, 08:36

I'm going to say "no"... Denzel will beat it. {nm} secretstalker Jan 03, 08:39

i will say yes, and be #1 until valentines day (the movie) {nm} islander Jan 03, 08:42

BOELI will open in Denzel's usual $20-25 Mil range, it will not beat Avatar. jlinn Jan 03, 09:25

Higher on BOELI. {nm} adrenalin112 Jan 03, 10:00

You've been too Gung-Ho before. As have I. My folly was TERM4. Just couldn't believe it wouldn't crush TERM3 by a sizeable margin. Toruk Facto Jan 03, 18:40

i like to make sure my opinions are clear as day, w/o breaking gut check rules. rather be wrong than sound like im playing both sides. {nm} adrenalin112 Jan 03, 23:13

Depends if people want to see another post-apocalyptic America, pretty much a yawn for me. And he has a book that can save everybody. Don't Vashta Nerada Jan 03, 10:37

taken had even less originality. boeli should do just fine. people will go to see denzel kickarse. {nm} adrenalin112 Jan 03, 10:54

even though i played TAKEN correct I am still stumped as to how that movie made the money it did. {nm} lobogotti Jan 03, 10:59

Really? I thought Taken is a really great action film. {nm} Wolfythunder Jan 04, 10:52

BOP published some interesting January BO analysis FYI (http://www.boxofficeprophets.com/column/index.cfm?columnID=12393) {nm} 15-May-2007 Jan 03, 08:49

That wasn't a new phenomenon for 2009 by any means... Big Momma's House 2, Cloverfield, 27 Dresses, etc. {nm} secretstalker Jan 03, 08:53

True, there may have been more than normal, but there have been lots of January hits over the past 6 years secretstalker Jan 03, 08:54

I'm not reading four pages of David's ramblings, thank you... that story could have been told in 500 words or less. {nm} secretstalker Jan 03, 09:11

well that's not a very nice thing to say, Eddie. Jealous much? {nm} mickeyd5 Jan 03, 11:32

Yeah, that's gotta be it, mud. Thanks for playing. {nm} secretstalker Jan 03, 12:02

I sometimes think that about.... Trying to come up with something funny here. Hmmm maybe shorting my resolution is the smart play. Vashta Nerada Jan 03, 11:33
