WP: Men spoke more than women even in Disney's Princess movies

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/01/25/researchers-have-discovered-a-major-problem-with-the-little-mermaid-and-other-disney-movies/

In the classic three Disney princess films, women speak as much as, or more than the men. “Snow White” is about 50-50. “Cinderella” is 60-40. And in “Sleeping Beauty,” women deliver a whopping 71 percent of the dialogue. Though these were films created over 50 years ago, they give ample opportunity for women to have their voices heard.

By contrast, all of the princess movies from 1989-1999 — Disney’s “Renaissance” era — are startlingly male-dominated. Men speak 68 percent of the time in “The Little Mermaid”; 71 percent of the time in “Beauty and the Beast”; 90 percent of the time in “Aladdin”; 76 percent of the time in “Pocahontas”; and 77 percent of the time in “Mulan”

thanks for another irrelevant social justice warrior post dmac {nm} adrenalin112 Jan 26, 14:32

inconvenient truths are inconvenient slipping jimmy Jan 26, 15:18

17yrs ago. Lets move on. {nm} adrenalin112 Jan 26, 15:36

Frozen came out in 2013. Despite being a story about two sister princesses, men claim 59 percent of the lines in that film. {nm} Antibody Jan 26, 15:45

One cannot diminish the power of Elsa because she is intentionally verbally noncommunicative and not a babbling idiot like Olaf. {nm} maltrinity Jan 26, 16:34

Why couldn't Olaf be voiced by a woman? Why are the sidekicks predominantly male? {nm} Antibody Jan 26, 16:36

the movie was damn near perfect in box office success & empowered females of all ages. Why are you looking to fault it? {nm} adrenalin112 Jan 26, 16:51

because it's a consistent pattern of bias {nm} slipping jimmy Jan 26, 17:01

yeah so instead of praising the movie for it's overall positive message, let's chastise it for uneven word count LMAO SMH {nm} adrenalin112 Jan 26, 17:26

The problem is the pattern. But you have to look at some of the unlikely films that STILL fit the pattern. CG63 Jan 26, 20:59

Why don't we just make everybody happy and have all new films star only black women? {nm} Strider907 Jan 26, 20:49

If black women got as many roles as white men, and vice versa, white boys would never, ever stop whining about it {nm} CG63 Jan 26, 21:00

Lol. +1 {nm} masonacj Jan 27, 06:12

It really is dumb. People just like to be mad about stuff I guess. {nm} masonacj Jan 27, 06:13

Mad about stuff like "people taking issue with the status quo". {nm} RogerMore Jan 27, 07:32

Less is more :-) {nm} jmt-nl Jan 26, 14:34

More or less. :P {nm} The Force-Ghost of DTravel Jan 26, 18:06
