While I agree that the current flood of reboots is a sign of a lack of creativity on Hollywood's behalf...
...there is another way to look at this phenomenon. In the theatre, reboots have been quite common for a couple thousands of years. What else is each new staging of a play? I must have seen several Macbeths and at least three incarnations of Chekhov's Uncle Wanja, but they all brought somethig different to the table. Each of those versions had different actors, and told basically the same story but in wildly different ways. In the theatre, this is common practive; in film we would call it a reboot or a remake and go complaining how much better the original was.
Maybe these comic book stories are the Greek myths and Shakespearean plays of our time? Maybe they too, therefore, can be re-interpreted time and again. You yourself cite Nolans Batman as a fine example of a reboot. But there have been earlier succesful incarnations (critically and commercially, remember Burton's) that I wouldn't have wanted to miss. I love the way Burton's Batman was at times whimsical, and Nolan's is an angel of revenge.
But again, I completely agree that Hollywood's craze with remakes and reboots is not born out of a theatre-like penchant for creating new artistic versions of old favorites. The drive here is commercial, and indeed is a sign of a lack of imagination. I just wanted to say that reboots and remakes aren't a bad idea per se. They just need to be done for the right reasons.
