Millar's style of irony isn't very intelligent... and his work IS parody.

It's actually pretty cliche and bland, especially if you've been exposed to any other kind of comic book work operating in the same vein. Millar is just really, really good as self-promotion.

His use of ultra-violence, rape and fascist fantasy to replace interest and characters or story doesn't automatically work because it's ironic, but it helps when the majority of the remaining comic book readership is older male and exhausted with bad storytelling in the genre. Millar's kind of approach translates far better in a comic book medium where it's just a few clicks to the left of serious, but in the world of movies, it's not that far off from what Frank Miller's THE SPIRIT was.

What KICK ASS has going for it is that it's at least set in what looks like a real world, but the pitch that this *IS* the real world as a post-superhero concept (and already done in movies so many times) is not going to translate to a mainstream who doesn't read his interviews or go to his website. The movie is going to need to sell completely on attitude alone, because parody tends to do a lot better when a genre (especially film) is in decline.

It will definitely be interesting to see what happens.

Is Kick-Ass actually starting to track better? MiyazakiFan Apr 05, 06:42

Tracking was in the 20's last time Notfabio posted. David Wells said Death at the Funeral was tracking better. So either Death is a mega gogreen Apr 05, 06:51

Tracking was in the 20s from Reel Source who also predicted over $80 million for Clash. secretstalker Apr 05, 07:13

We should ask horlicks, the Twitter expert, what he thinks... surely it's gotta be on there already. {nm} secretstalker Apr 05, 07:13

Its tracking amazingly well on Twitter. 4200 tweets last week. Ninja Assassin by comparison had 1700. horlicks Apr 05, 13:28

FWIW, KCKAS is already playing in theaters in Europe. {nm} Antibody Apr 05, 13:59

Definitely a factor in number of tweets. There are for instance a lot of Twitter users in the UK. {nm} Facto Apr 05, 14:23

Yes that does make a difference, but its factored into my ratio estimate and total. {nm} horlicks Apr 05, 15:23

Would be fantastic to find out what tracking service and/or bureau the Los Angeles Times (LAT) uses... Facto Apr 05, 07:38

Death at a Funeral is not likely to make anywhere near WDIG2 numbers, I'd say. It's got direct competition from WDIG2 itself, it has no Jane Facto Apr 05, 07:24

Different audience. The older, African-Amercan female fans of TPERR and WDIG2 are not gonna see the vulgar DEFUN. {nm} Antibody Apr 05, 08:57

I think word-of-mouth is going to play a huge factor with this movie. It has been released in parts of Europe and... numbersix_99 Apr 05, 07:21

Actually can anyone enlighten me .. What is the main difference between kick **** and superhero movie [SHERO] , which flopped? {nm} karspov Apr 05, 07:45

Kick @ss is ironic, and Superhero Movie is a spoof. The difference is intelligence {nm} numbersix_99 Apr 05, 07:58

Having not read the comic (nor am I interested in reading comics in general), from the movie alone... numbersix_99 Apr 05, 11:29

Genre, for one, to go by the trailers: SHERO the thin SPIDM parody and KCKAS the coming-of-age geek transformation story played straight. {nm} second gary Apr 05, 07:59

KCKAS is very much a parody as well, just more subversive. {nm} Antibody Apr 05, 09:48

SHERO was a spoof, Kick-Ass is based off a graphic novel (already has fanbase) and has actual action in it. Big difference. {nm} HurricaneKid Apr 05, 07:59

Spoof movies haven't been successful in the better part of a decade. {nm} MiyazakiFan Apr 05, 08:51
