I think the popularity of the whole Alien vs. Predator concept was a significant part of the big opening week. There were fans of the Alien franchise, fans of the Predator franchise, and fans of the AvP Dark Horse Comic publication. Was the product satisfactory to any fan bases? Not really. But it's hard to judge the opening weekend as a sign of success. I'd much rather point to the fact that it made almost half of it's domestic gross in that 1st weekend (a sure sign of bad word of mouth from audiences).
